Because various FODMAPs exist in all edible plants, multiple types are present in vegan foods and their repercussions are cumulative. This means that if you eat a variety of FODMAPs in an assortment of dishes at a meal, the effects on the bowel will be compounded. That’s why it’s vital to take into consideration not just the amount of a single FODMAP in a single food but also the totality of all FODMAPs per serving in a prepared dish as well as in the other foods consumed with it at the meal. It’s also critical to limit portion size, because large amounts of even IBS-safe foods will push the amount of FODMAPs ingested over the tolerable limit and into the danger zone.
