Years ago I went to a poetry reading by the poet Gary Snyder. After the reading, he gave a short talk about things that he was interested in at the time. One subject he talked about was “bioregionalism” as it applied to publishing. The notion was that we have natural “bioregions,” regions within which we share common goals, common concerns, etc., and that publishing, like food distribution, would be better and more effective if it were more closely linked to these bioregions.
I was recently in Bhubaneshwar, the capital city of Orissa, scouring bookstores for information about the many tribal peoples who live in the state. I was having very little luck until I went into Modern Book Depot one afternoon and asked the man behind the desk if he could help me.
