Rice cultivation on the hills by Jayantha’s village.

Jayantha Kumara, who worked in the hotel where I was staying in south-central Sri Lanka, asked one day if I would like to come as a guest to his village in western Katchh, and when I said that I’d be delighted, plans were made. Very early the following Sunday morning, he arranged for a cycle rickshaw, driven by his friend, and off we went. In terms of miles, his village was not very far away, but on a three-wheeled scooter, it took us three or four hours to get there through the mountains.
