A rice meal in a village in southern Orissa, a more rural setting than the Winchester. The rice is mounded on a plate made of stitched-together leaves of the sal tree; the curries and condiments come in small bowls alongside.
It’s hard to generalize about the restaurants here in the town of Kandy, in the hills of tropical Sri Lanka, because there are so many different kinds. The one where I’m sitting as I write this, for example, the Winchester Café, serves mostly South Indian Tamil food. Just up the street there’s a Muslim halal restaurant, and a little farther along, another Tamil restaurant, only this one serving Sri Lankan Tamil food, not South Indian Tamil food.
