At rural fairs (melas) there’s a lot to marvel at and inexpensive treats on sale for people of all ages: glass bangles, deep-fried snacks, colorful balloons, cassettes of Bollywood songs, and much more. At a mela in a village west of Ahmadabad, in the state of Gujarat, several henna women were offering to decorate women’s hands with henna, using wooden blocks to stamp on the designs. As I waited to have my hands done, a young girl of seven or eight was smiling happily as her hands and arms were gently and firmly stamped with the designs.
