In Assam, in the far northeast corner of India, there’s a century-old national park called Kaziranga. It’s one of the last preserves of the one-horned rhino; it also shelters tigers, wild water buffaloes, wild elephants, and other creatures. Visitors enter the park on elephants. The mahout (elephant keeper) and the elephant he cares for are a team for life; when her calf grows bigger, he’ll have his own mahout. They’re heading home for the evening after bathing in the river.
