Other countries including the USA, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Chile and New Zealand (collectively known as the New World) came to winegrowing without traditional rules and guidelines. Most have introduced appellation systems based loosely on the AC system, but leave the choice of grape variety and production techniques to the individual producers.
In the USA there is a system of AVAs (American Viticultural Areas). The name of an area appears on a label, but this guarantees only the origin of the grapes. The AVA indicates the likely style of the wine only insofar as a wine produced in a warm AVA will produce richer wine than one produced in a cooler AVA.
