These are good places to buy wines for everyday drinking. Competition between supermarkets has meant that prices are relatively low, but at the lower end of the market, quality can be questionable. Many buyers working for supermarkets are obliged to buy to a certain price to meet customers’ expectations, even though in some cases good wines cannot be found at those prices from their suppliers. Expect minimal advice, and delivery is more the exception than the rule. Avoid supermarkets for very expensive wines, as prices are rarely competitive, and selection will be limited. Check bottles carefully before buying, as some branches do not take storage seriously.
