You should buy the wines you enjoy, but bear in mind that some wines are not intended to be kept for long periods. The following wines are good candidates for collecting, as they will become more enjoyable with ageing:

  • Red wines from regions in France such as Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhône Valley. Most reds made from grape varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, syrah (or shiraz), sangiovese (Chianti, Brunello) and nebbiolo (Barolo).
  • White Burgundy, Graves end Riesling from Germany, and Alsace.
  • Fortified wines can be kept safely for some years, but only certain styles, such as vintage port and Maderia, will improve with age. Others, such as oloroso sherry and Marsala, will simply remain the same
