  • About
Before you start shopping for shelving and racks, you need to assess the suitability of the area you plan to use. Start by measuring the existing conditions in your chosen location:
  • Take readings of the temperature and humidity in different weather conditions (a hot, sunny day and a cool, damp day), and at different times of the year.
  • Think about how you can light the area when you need to read labels or retrieve wine. Bear in mind that the wine should be in darkness for most of the time. Do you need an electric light, or will a torch suffice?
  • Check that the area is well-ventilated. Air should be able to enter and circulate, but there should be no draughts.
  • Finally, calculate the area. Measure the floor space, wall height and width both before and after you add insulation and vapour barriers. Note the position of air vents, doors and windows.
