The most important thing to discover at this stage is whether the wine is in good condition. Wine should smell clean, whatever other smells are there. If it smells of wet cardboard, rotten eggs, burnt rubber, vinegary or musty, it is faulty. It may be oxidized, have cork taint or be turning to vinegar - whatever the reason, it won’t be very nice to drink.
