This is known as a “thief’ because, in theory, you can remove the cork without making a hole, replace the wine with water, and put the cork back. In practice, this is unlikely, as corks expand after removal and seldom go back into a bottle completely. You use this corkscrew by inserting the thin prongs down the side of the cork, between the cork and the bottle neck. You’ll need to use a see-saw motion to ease the prongs in. Once in, pull firmly to remove the cork.
THE LATEST CORKSCREW DESIGNS Clockwise from top right: the Waiter’s friend; a double-screw corkscrew; a basic corkscrew; and the twin-lever (or “wing”) corkscrew. There are many fashionable variations of these basic designs, but they work in essentially the same way.
