Port is fairly indestructible, so ruby, tawny and vintage ports can safely be bought from supermarkets, as well as individual wine merchants. For older vintages, you should contact established wine merchants. Auction houses are also a good source of old vintage ports, sometimes at surprisingly reasonable prices. Vintage port is bottled in dark heavy glass and often sealed with wax, so oxidation and leakages are very rare. Store the bottles on their sides.

LYING IN WAIT These densely packed bottles of port are destined to age for several years. They will he on their sides undisturbed for years or even decades.
