These are sometimes used to open bottles of vintage port whose corks are stuck fast. Heat the tongs in an open fire until they are red hot and apply them to the neck of the bottle - make sure that the bottle is standing upright. The sudden heat cracks the glass and the top of the bottle -cork and all - comes off cleanly.
