Brandies from outside Europe are rarely of high quality, although a few “boutique” producers, such as Germain-Robin in California and Angove’s in Australia, have won acclaim.
The brandies of Jerez in southern Spain are highly regarded by the Spaniards, but are not to everyone’s taste. Matured in sherry casks and sweetened and darkened with caramel and other additives, they are certainly rich, but lack elegance. Nor are they cheap. Georgia and Armenia have a long tradition of brandy production, and Winston Churchill was partial to them, but they are not currently available in the West. Cheap brandy is not usually worth buying, except for cooking.
