We can finally say it: “Plant-based athlete” is no longer an oxymoron. Heck, these days it’s not even a rarity.

That wasn’t the case in 2009 when I started my blog, No Meat Athlete. As I wondered whether the vegetarian diet I wanted to start eating would work for marathon training and support me in my quest to qualify for Boston, a search online revealed little to calm my fears.

Stories were out there about the rare athlete who excelled in spite of his or her vegetarian or even vegan diet (almost nobody dared to say “because of”), but the story of plant-based diets in competitive sports lacked enough examples and any semblance of organization.
