You can’t keep fresh poultry in the refrigerator for longer than 2 days. Until then you can store it in its original wrapping, but after that you should rewrap and freeze it.
To freeze, divide the chicken into portions that make sense for your family. I don’t wrap more than two portions together in a single package because our family is small and a double portion is enough for us for one dinner. You can freeze poultry for up to 6 months.
When freezing chicken parts, I always separate the white meat and dark meat pieces. When freezing a whole chicken, remove the giblets first and freeze them separately if you want to keep them. Giblets are more perishable than the bird itself; they keep frozen for 2 months only.
