There are many different varieties and types of edible mushrooms out there – more than 2,300 it’s thought – and with this overwhelming choice, it’s hard to know where to start when it comes to choosing the mushroom you’d like to cook for supper.
Our mushroom directory helps with a longlist of the best edible mushrooms that are generally available or likely to be spotted at a market. We excluded lesser-used edible varieties and focussed on those that you are likely to find, whether in supermarket punnets, in delicatessens and greengrocers, and in farmer’s markets. Some mushrooms profiled are popular and commonly found, a few are rarer ones you might be more lucky to come across, so grab them when you do.
