The caps are often silky, shiny, or shaggy with veil remnants, and do not change colour when wet. Stems are typically swollen or bulbous. Many have violet colours in the young gills and flesh. Some have strong smells. There was a subgenus Leprocybe, but this has now been dropped and the majority of the fungi in it have been transferred to Sericeocybe.
