I could write a whole book about “mi mamá,” but in the interest of space I will just share a few of my favorite stories. My sweetest memory of mi mamá is that she never turned a hungry soul away. I clearly remember a couple of times when strangers came to our door asking for food or a drink, because they had just crossed the border and had not eaten a thing in several days. She always gave them something. She taught me through example that no human being should ever be denied food, and especially something to drink. She was so very special that way.
