One of three of Paris’s marchés biologiques, or organic markets, Marché Biologique des Batignolles takes up a series of blocks in the 17th arrondissement. While the vendors here are all certified organic, not all are actual producers, so one must keep an eye out for farm-fresh produce. The farmers from Au Val du Coutant bring seasonal fruits and vegetables to the market from their farm in Chailly-en-Brie, located forty-one miles from Paris. The selection is concentrated to a few hardy seasonal varieties, due mostly to the fact that the farm does not grow with the aid of greenhouses. The fresh fruits and vegetables are high quality and indicative of what is truly in season in the region. Patricia, the stand’s friendly vendor, is happy to explain to visitors what is in season on the farm as well as give suggestions on how to prepare whatever lovely, fresh vegetables you decide to take home with you. Across from the Au Val du Coutant stand you’ll find Hermione Boehrer, whose farm is in Coulommiers, forty miles outside of Paris. Hermione specializes in herbs, wheatgrass (which you can purchase in shot or juice form at her stand), baby greens, potted herbs and flowers, and organic potting soil. Her bright green sorrel leaves are ideal for Sorrel Sauce, which is traditionally served with fish. You can also visit Hermione and Patricia at Marché Raspail.
