To my mind nothing conjures up images of plenty, good food, love and security more than shelves bent a little under the weight of large jars of homemade pickles. Some of the following are commercial preparations, but still worth having: capers, garlic, gherkins, green peppercorns, olives, plums, quinces, seitan, shallots, umeboshi plums and walnuts (perfect with cheese).
