Like all foods, fish and seafood can be adversely affected by man-made pollutants, such as PCBs, and by naturally occurring toxins, such as “red tide.” Local fish and wildlife officials in conjunction with local departments of health monitor the commercial catches of finfish and shellfish. When problems do occur, they are widely publicized by the media, and affected species are not found at the marketplace. Seafood purchased through reputable commercial sources, therefore, presents no problems. Those who want to eat fish or shellfish caught on their own should check with local authorities.
