Kids Company is a children’s charity run by a very nice Persian lady called Camilla Batmanghelidjh. Put simply, she has taken it upon herself to help the most desperate, destitute and disenchanted youngsters in Peckham, Camberwell and Brixton, giving them hope, shelter and love. She does this using a unique formula of child-involvement, one-to-one counselling and tuition; and an all-embracing energy and compassion which dazzle all who meet her. She has an equally energetic and caring team of staff (some 38 of them now), and works not only directly with local kids, but through schools nationwide. The government is so impressed by her creation that they are looking at the possibility of creating similar networks elsewhere. That is not to say that Kids Company is getting anything like enough support. They were recently evicted from the railway arches in Camberwell where they had set up, and they are always grateful for every single penny which is raised for them.
