I’ve met a handful of apple people—enough to know that they’re a type.
One of them, the farmer from whom I buy most of my apples, grows seventy-four kinds of apples in his orchard. I could use a different kind of apple every week at my shop, and it would take me nearly a year and a half to go through all his apples.
Another one, whose cider we sell by the glass in our café, came to our first meeting with an album’s worth of photos of apples and apple trees. At first he seemed slightly self-conscious when I exclaimed, “Oh, you brought photos!” but when he saw that I was more enthused than amused, he was relieved. What can I say? I’m an apple people person.
