  • About

Much like Thailand, rice is central to Korean cuisine, and shares the fact that the Korean word for rice (bap) is also used to describe meals or food in general. That’s quite a preposterous position for one ingredient, when instead of asking, ‘Have you had a meal?’, Koreans usually ask, ‘Have you eaten rice today?’

Rice is the staple food for most Koreans and, as a result, it appears at almost every meal. Although it is most usually cooked alone, it is also occasionally teamed with other grains, such as millet or barley. It is also combined with chestnuts and different kinds of beans. Rice in Korea often appears in a gruel form, which is given to the elderly and infirm.
