Born in 1880 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he died in 1968. Exposed to the old Spanish tradition, as well as to the new trends, he can be described as a product of both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His work as a portrait painter has been outstanding. His interpretation of the Puerto Rican countryside is considered an unique merge of the realistic and the impressionistic schools. He loved his native land and its people, as shown by his portrayals of our folklore, our traditions, and our typical Puerto Rican jíbaros (peasants) and plain folk. I am proud to include this masterful touch of Puerto Rican art in the presentation of Puerto Rican cookery.
