A passionate advocate for food and health, Agatha Achindu had a vision that led her to innovate in the grocery sector. Starting in her home kitchen, she built the first nationally available brand of fresh-frozen organic baby and tots cuisine, Yummy Spoonfuls Organic Baby Food. She talked with me in the winter of 2021 about how the fresh fruit market works (or doesn’t work) for a midsize producer.

Abra Berens: Can you tell me a bit about how Yummy Spoonfuls started and your motivation for bringing these products to market?

Agatha Achindu: What I tell people is that Yummy Spoonfuls found me. I was so frustrated with the food in my community, so I started teaching workshops on how to make fresh, whole foods for kids. Then I decided that just teaching these workshops wouldn’t move the needle on the food that’s available. I had to make it convenient for parents, so, in 2006, I decided to launch Yummy Spoonfuls to make fresh, organic food for babies and toddlers with no preservatives. That was the beginning of a great (and super-challenging) journey: Making fresh food in America isn’t easy.
