Currants have an incredibly short season toward the end of July in my area and are only around for a couple of weeks. I find currants generally still on their clusters and look to make sure that the majority of fruit has taut skin and a vibrant, almost sparkly color. Because of how densely packed currants normally come, check for signs of mold or mildew on the underside of the package if it is clear, or in the center of the package if you can access it. Black currants are the same, but will have a duller, almost blueberry-like dustiness to them.
