A friend told me once that the number one reason she doesn’t buy fresh fruit regularly is because it always goes to waste. Admittedly, I struggle with the same thing and so do most other households. In 2019, 35 percent (229 million tons) of the food produced in America was unsold or uneaten. Thirty-seven percent of that food is wasted in homes, with fruit and vegetables constituting 34 percent of the total of wasted food. The average household spends $1,800 per year on food that gets thrown away. Yuck. Food waste strains our agricultural system, our environment, and our budgets. We will never be rid of waste entirely, but we can always do better, and that starts with being conscious of the issue and open to solutions.
