‘The Connaught’s the place to be,’ she said, so I wrote to Michel Bourdin. It worked. He offered me the job as demi-chef de partie. I was delighted. My brother then told me of a job at the Reform Club in Pall Mall. At twenty-one, I knew I wasn’t ready for a sous-chef’s job, but I thought I’d take a look anyway. I got it, and turned down the Connaught (silly boy). I was far too young, but I liked the challenge. Jenny started with me, and we stayed there for about a year.
