It was believed for a time that the mastic tree’s resin was a gift from Saint Isidore, who was martyred in 25 AD – it is thought that the shrub cried tears of gum after watching her torture.
During the Byzantine Empire, mastic was used to scent soaps and was also placed on the skin as a form of sun protection. It was also thought that mastic would provide various health benefits, including increases in sexual desire, restful sleep, a natural antidepressant and the preservation of youthful looks and beauty.
