Nutmeg originated from the Molucca islands, which are now part of Indonesia. It is produced by an evergreen tree along with mace, though nutmeg is sweeter and has a stronger aroma.
There is evidence of the use of nutmeg as far back as the first century when it was mentioned by Pliny. It is thought that he regarded nutmeg as a valuable spice for its medicinal qualities. Other ancient texts regarding nutmeg as a beneficial medicine were those of the Vedic literature, which stated that nutmeg was useful for reducing fevers, alleviating headaches and reducing bad breath.
