The exact origin of cacao is not known, but it is generally accepted that the cacao tree came from the Amazon rainforests in South America.
It is said that the cacao seed was consumed by ancient civilisations including the Olmecs, the Mayans and the Aztecs from around 1800 BC. There is evidence to suggest that it was eaten before 1900 BC, but the general consensus is that the first proven use of cacao was in a drink made by the Olmecs in South America .
Betrothed Mayans were said to have shared a beverage of cacao during their wedding ceremony, which may have been the earliest link of chocolate and romance, a tradition that still flourishes today. Many cultures in the world still associate chocolate with celebrations and love. The taste has come a very long way from the bitter drink created almost 4,000 years ago, to the sweet chocolate we enjoy today.
