Before Christopher Columbus arrived in America, shamans there would mix chilli with other plants, in order to aid in spiritual journeys to the other worlds.
Chilli is not for everyone! Scientists have likened eating it to riding rollercoasters or skydiving. The capsaicin in it triggers pain receptors, warning our brain of danger, even though we know we are relatively safe. This releases a wave of endorphins, as our brain tells us that we are doing something dangerous. As is the case with many things, eventually a chilli lover may need more and more heat in order to get the rush of endorphins – we can eventually adapt and tolerate higher levels of heat through regular consumption.
