Mint is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean and Asia, and it can grow in all regions of the world where there is water. It was discovered in Egyptian tombs from over 3,000 years ago. Some of the early uses of mint included the treatment of stomach and chest pains, as well as a variety of digestive disorders.
The Greeks used mint in baths to stimulate their bodies. They were also known to use mint to clean their banqueting tables and to decorate their great halls – this may have been one of the earliest uses of mint as an air freshener. The Romans preferred to use it as an oral cleanser and a digestive aid. Some have also suggested that they used it in some of their sauces.
