As a herb that was once offered to guests as a symbol of hospitality and friendship, mint has had a significant place in several cultures throughout history. Greek mythology stated that mint had once been a beautiful river nymph named Minthe, who was turned into a plant by Persephone, the wife of Hades. Persephone had discovered that Hades was in love with Minthe, and so she cursed her to become a plant, so that all would tread upon and crush her. After Hades failed to undo the spell, he blessed Minthe with the overwhelming aroma mint now has, so that he could smell and be near to whenever someone trod on her and released the aroma.
