Put your feet up and let’s talk a little about headspace. For years, people have associated stress with ill health, and there’s an abundance of evidence to back this up. Everything from heart disease to cancer has been linked with stressful lifestyles and high levels of stress hormones. Though some people are more resilient to stress than others, we will all have significant stressors throughout our lives that will cause physiological and behavioural changes in us. Imagine going on a first date, and saying, when asked about yourself, ‘Hi, here’s a little about me; I’m really cranky, I’m losing my sense of humour, my interest in life in dwindling, I snap at people all the time, I can never finish a task before I move on to the next, I have difficulty sleeping and I hate mornings because I have to do it all again’. Chances are, you wouldn’t get a second date, but whether we say those things or not, if we let stress get the better of us, that is the person we are. Managing stress allows us to be the person we want to be, and not the monster it turns us into.
