“I wasn’t bad at learning, I was in the top group in everything. But I was very lazy, there was always something else to do.”

The girls’ school was down the road and the only time there were any mixed classes was languages. Hence taking every language possible. I took Spanish and German, and you had to take French. I was really into languages, but I never learnt anything. It just meant that I could hang out with girls.
When we had a careers talk I said I wanted to be a rock star. And that was punishable, you know, detention. I was always on fucking detention. You could save up your detention, three detentions and trade it for a cane. It bloody hurt, they used to make you bleed. Some of those teachers were sadistic.
