Along the Silk Road, particularly in Central asia, it is customary to end a meal with a sweet something—not too sweet though, since their taste buds are used to the sugars of seasonal fruits. A large platter of fresh fruits, compote of preserved fruits, nuts, and kishmish (dried fruits) laden the table along with a big pot of chai (green tea) infused with cardamom pods.

Although I was raised in new york, my mother continued the tradition of serving the same desserts she was accustomed to, with the addition of fruity cakes and floral scented cookies. Rather than serve elaborate cakes full of frosting and sugar, typical of Western culture desserts, my mothers’ desserts evolved to incorporate both the silk road and the West.
