There are three fundamental types of basil used across Southeast Asia, each with specific applications. Generally they’re not used interchangeably. In the U.S., where Asian basil varieties are still hard to find, Italian “sweet” basil may be substituted for Thai basil or even lemon basil, but the dish will not have an authentic Southeast Asian flavor profile.
