July to October Sweetcorn

Every gardener loves growing sweetcorn; it is one of the few crops you don’t have to bend down to pick and in a hot summer it’s easy to grow. But sweetcorn is an import from Mexico, and the UK is unfortunately on its climatic extremes, so the crop really struggles to ripen in a poor summer. We coax it along with crop covers hut it is often not ripe until September when the barbecues are starting to be packed away. In recent years we have been starting the season with sweetcorn from our farm in France.
