Bowl foods have evolved from communal feeding situations in which everybody helped himself to a portion from a large pot of stew. Serving food in bowls is a quick way to satisfy the hunger of a large crowd of waiting guests. Most dishes served in bowls, such as BBQ Hominy Stew, Tomato-Braised Cauliflower, or Black Bean Soup are held hot and can be swiftly served into a bowl or onto a plate. Dishes such as the Salad of Bean Starch Sheets or Stir-Fried Shredded Flatbread require some last-minute cooking or final assembly.
