Beautiful cookies, hot off the presses
Bretzeli, or Bricelets as they are known in French, are a popular cookie in many parts of Switzerland, especially Bern and Fribourg. A dough or batter is placed in a hot press, which indents a design on the cookie. Then they are either rolled up, folded, or left flat.

Today, many families treasure their fer à bricelets / Brezeleisen, an electric device that looks a bit like a waffle iron with pretty designs, sometimes including the Swiss flag. Although there are some affordable new models available, the vintage presses from the Swiss firm Jura (of coffee machine fame) are a hot commodity and regularly go for over 300 CHF on the second-hand market.
