From the castle to the masses

Another of Switzerland’s cookie love stories began in a castle in canton Lucerne and it’s one that has been passed down through the decades. In 1946, Willi Meyer told the tale at the Wiggertal Heimattag(a celebration of traditions in the Wiggertal, the region around Willisau) and it was later published in the organization’s annual magazine, the Heimatkunde.

It begins in Schloss Heidegg, a castle built in 1185 by a knight of the same name, and today famous for its vineyards and beautiful rose garden. Throughout the centuries it was owned by different wealthy families, and it was Elisabeth Pfyffer and her husband who lived there in the mid-1800s. During that time, Martha Peyer, the daughter of Elisabeth’s cousin, came to work at the castle as a young cook.
