When the bridge from Harris to the Outer Hebridean isle of Scalpay, a mere 300 metres away, was opened in 1997, there must have been celebrations throughout the small island; it is only some two and a half miles long but with a healthy population of nearly 300. One feature that has encouraged even more people since then to cross over the bridge to Scalpay is the North Harbour Bistro. Opened in 2014 by Chef George Lavery, it has already gained many awards, including the prestigious ‘Islands Restaurant of the Year’ in 2017. George trained at Anniesland College, then worked in various establishments, including in Jersey where he trained under eminent chef David Cameron, and for a couple of years in Ireland. Later he was one of a team of top chefs who would cook at Wimbledon, Ascot and Lords for the season and then work in the French Alps in the winter.
