Glengorm Estate on Mull has some 60 breeding cows and, depending on the season, the number of young stock can be between 150 and 250. These are pure Highland cattle - the cute little ones with the thick shaggy hair and long curved horns. The Highland bulls (there are three ‘senior’ bulls and two yearlings) are even more magnificent, with their stocky build and larger girth.
Tom Nelson, owner of Glengorm Castle and farm manager, tells me he also has some 750 blackface sheep, so their lamb (more hogget than lamb as it is one to two years old) is also for sale, along with the wild venison shot on the estate. But it is the cattle I am here to find out about.
