When I discussed with Mademoiselle Vivette the question of inexpensive white wines, she expressed her firm opinion that the vintners of Alsace are now offering some of the best values in all the world of wine. She said:“At prices that are quite extraordinarily low, we can find wines that are clean, crisp, delicious, grapey, lovely and refreshing to drink—perfect with so many foods—even, because of their aromatic quality, as an accompaniment to the lighter meats.” Following Mademoiselle Vivette’s advice, I have thoroughly explored the Alsatian wines that come to the United States and, indeed, they provide extraordinary pleasure at extraordinary values.
