Meaning ‘abode of the clouds’, Meghalaya is a small, hilly state with the highest rainfall levels in the world. The warm, very wet climate is perfect for growing a large variety of fruit, vegetables, medicinal plants and spices, including rice, maize, wheat and oilseeds such as mustard and rapeseed. Despite this bounty of fruit and vegetables, many of the local dishes are meat-based, with pork being the first choice. Jadoh, a spicy dish of rice and pork or liver, is consumed almost every day and Chinese food is also eaten regularly, often washed down with a local drink known as kyat.
