The name of this state is derived from the word ‘Karunadu’, which means ‘lofty land’. Much of Karnataka is on the high plateau that lies between the western and eastern ‘Ghats’, precipitous mountains that run along the western and eastern coasts of peninsular India. The rest of the state lies along a 300km (186-mile) stretch of coastline with smooth, sandy beaches that are popular with tourists.
Coffee and rice are two of the staple crops grown on lush plantations in the Kodagu (Coorg) region of Karnataka.
